Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console could cost as much as $1,800 when it launches, according to a new report, putting Project Helix far above today’s already expensive consoles.

Fortune tech correspondent Sebastian Herrera reports that Xbox has internally projected a consumer price of between $1,200 and $1,800 for the next-generation hardware. That is not a confirmed MSRP, and Microsoft could lower the final price by subsidizing the console.

The report arrives as Xbox attempts to rebuild its struggling hardware business. Current-generation Xbox consoles have reportedly sold just over one-third as many units as the PlayStation 5, while the division’s profit margin is around 3%.

Next-gen Xbox could cost more than twice the Series X

Microsoft’s current Xbox Series X already costs $799.99 in the US following a major price increase in August. The company raised 512GB models by $100 and 1TB models by $150, while discontinuing the 2TB version.

That would make a $1,200 Project Helix roughly $400 more expensive than the current Series X. An $1,800 price would be more than double the console’s existing cost.

Microsoft attributed the increases to rising memory and storage prices, saying those costs had increased more than 2.5 times and could double again by fall 2027.

Xbox officially announced Project Helix in March, describing it as a next-generation console being developed with AMD that will play both Xbox and PC games. Microsoft has not announced a retail price or release date.

Xbox reportedly planning handheld and Game Pass changes

Fortune also reports that Microsoft is targeting a holiday 2027 release for its next-generation handheld, followed by the Project Helix console during the 2028 holiday season.

The company is reportedly considering a major Game Pass overhaul that would let players choose features through a tiered, à la carte system. Potential options include console-focused games, cloud gaming and multiplayer access.
