Nintendo Gives New Official Statement on Switch 2’s Future

The Nintendo Switch 2 hasn't enjoyed the best early days, with one controversy around the console having popped up after another. From its price tag to its lack of any true AAA system seller games, the successor to Nintendo's most successful console ever hasn't been able to catch a break.

However, Nintendo isn't simply sitting on its laurels and doing nothing. A new, official statement has just been released about the future of the Switch 2, and it may be enough to give some of its critics a bit more of a positive outlook.

Nintendo of America Reveals the Future of the Switch 2

Devon Pritchard is the current president and COO of Nintendo of America and, earlier this month, he sat down with Variety's co-editor-in-chief, Cynthia Littleton, at the Variety Entertainment & Technology Summit presented by EY, to spill details on what's in store for the Switch 2. Pritchard discussed the significance of 2026 Nintendo, both overall and specifically, the company's plans for the near future, and the hurdles that the system still has to face.

"We’re at the beginning of Nintendo Switch 2,” Pritchard said. “This is just beginning, and we’ve already had some really wonderful experiences, both ours and third party come to the table, and I can’t wait to see what the system is going to do and what our talented developers will bring to the table."

"But again, those partnerships and touchpoints with companies like Sony and Sony Pictures around how we can bring those experiences more broadly to not only our current players and fans but to new ones, I think that’s one of the most exciting things for us over the next few years”

Pritchard is deliberately highlighting that the Switch 2 is still early in its lifespan, and is possibly aiming to soothe the feelings of fans who currently find the system's library underwhelming in the process. He also highlights Nintendo's continued relationship with Sony and Sony Pictures, who are responsible for the upcoming Legend of Zelda live-action movie.

The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo's biggest franchises, and it's one that's currently celebrating its 40th anniversary. It makes sense that Pritchard would draw attention to its upcoming film adaptation, even if it's coming out in 2027, as it and this year's Ocarina of Time remake are what currently have the fandom enraptured. Sadly, Pritchard did not provide any information about when the Switch 2 will get its own original, exclusive Zelda game.

“There are more channels for content than ever before,” Pritchard went on to say in the interview, shifting the topic of discussion to the future issues the Switch 2 may run into. “Content is available 24/7. So I think you hear a lot of times, people saying, we are competing for consumers’ time and I think what’s unique is that Nintendo is focused instead on building experiences that create relationships that last generations and I think that’s a different kind of focus for us."

"But that really is where we put our time and our energy is, how do we create those fun experiences? And that becomes the test: is something fun? It sounds simple, of course it’s not.”
